Where is Langkawi Airport located?

The airport is located at Padang Matsirat – it’s in 25 minutes’ drive from Langkawi’s center, Kuah Town. Langkawi airport can be reached from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysian capital, in 1 hour flight.

The airport is in 15 minutes away from Langkawi’s popular Pantai Cenang and Pantai Tengah.

After entire Langkawi Island became a duty-free zone there’s no more need to spend much time at its airport’s stores.

Langkawi airport is very easy to navigate at: after you step into the arrival hall you’ll see the long counter of car rental suppliers along the right-hand corridor.

Public transport is very limited around the island so it’s the strongest argument to rent your own vehicle and reach your hotel happily!

Do I actually need a Langkawi rental car?

You can catch a taxi as an alternative but it will cost you a pretty penny! The taxi rates there are quite high plus be ready for 50% surcharge after 11.00 PM.

Langkawi taxis do not run on meters – the rates are fixed between certain places. The shortest ride on a taxi – 15 minutes – will cost at least 18 RM.

As the most resorts are located far from the airport your taxi rate (25-60 RM) to reach your hotel may be equal for a whole day car rental rate! So it is worth your dollar to rent your own transport in Langkawi.

Some local companies downtown can promise you outstandingly cheap car rental prices – but that means they offer you old un-maintained cars without a license for renting out!

It’s illegal and means getting into a trouble. Using suspiciously cheap car rental services definitely is not worth trying to save a dollar!

What is so dangerous about renting an unlicensed car?

• Unlicensed car becomes a problem if the authorities find it out during a check on the road or your traffic stop. It will take a lot of your time to explain them you didn’t know anything about the license (especially if the policemen hardly speak English).

• It can be much worse in the case of the accident – any insurance won’t work on unlicensed cars (despite you were assured that everything’s ok when renting)! So you will have to pay for everything yourself!

Langkawi Car Rental Fuel Policy

Companies will offer you Full/to Full fuel policy which is the most convenient, by the way. You get the vehicle with a full tank of fuel (check that it is really full) and drive away happily.

You pay only for the fuel you’ve used during your trips (the cost of the fuel is not included to the car rental rate). If it is the full tank or only a half of it – doesn’t matter. You need just to refuel your vehicle to the full tank to return the car to the company with the same fuel level as when you started.

The petrol is quite cheap in Langkawi! 1,9 RM for 1 liter. There are 15 petrol stations across the island.

You can also use other car rental locations of Kasina and Green Matrix companies around Langkawi, but beware of suspicious companies offering unlicensed cars (especially there are lots of them in Kuah). Non-airport locations in Langkawi can offer a wider choice of vehicles including huge variety of economy and compact ones starting at 34 $ price per day.
